LAN party is a social gathering of participants with personal computers or compatible game consoles, where a local area network (LAN) connection is established between the devices using a router or switch, primarily for the purpose of playing multiplayer video games together. LAN party events differ significantly from LAN gaming centers and Internet cafes in that LAN parties generally require participants to bring your own computer (BYOC)[1] and are not permanent installations, often taking place in general-use venues or residences.

You're attending your first LAN. It's an exciting experience but what do you need to take and how do you need to prepare?

First and foremost, the most important part - Your computer. LincsLAN is a BYOC (bring your own computer) event, so without that, you'll be sitting in a seat, at a table twiddling your thumbs.

Bring everything else that's required for your computer, such as

  • Monitor
  • HDMI/Display Port cables
  • Power Cables
  • Power extension bar (4 sockets preferably)
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Headphones (no speakers)
  • Phone charger

That's all you'll need. You may have noticed that we also haven't suggested bringing an ethernet cable, that's because we supply all networking related equipment. So just show up on the evening at the start of the event and you'll be good to play!

A few other things to remember, seeing as this is a multi day event

  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping mat/camp bed/hammock
  • Pillow
  • Change of clothes
  • Deodorant (we all need it, don't want to be sitting in a room with gamer smell)
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste

You're going to be away for two nights, so remember to bring some snacks and drinks to keep you powered throughout your time here. Just try to not over do it on the alcohol, there's nothing worse than having a horrible hangover whilst you're trying to have fun.

Budget for takeaways too, as there will be a big order on the Friday!
